H.N.N. - Haven News Network
//Treena Stardis looks directly at the camera, her face pale and drawn, "Dire news from the Spine. The Hostiles have launched a lightning assault on Cape Amran, seat of House Amran, vassal of House Hallolas. Fighting is underway in the streets of Cape Amran and in the Osprey's Nest, fortification of House Amran. In fact, it is expected that the Osprey's Nest will be lost within the next ten to fifteen minutes."

A map of the central Spine takes over the screen, showing Cape Amran on the coast north of Beacon. Treena's voice continues speaking over the map, tight and carefully controlled, "The Citadel has assured us that they are rushing what troops they can to the city, but since the Hostiles are already within the city, they have locked all Waygates in Cape Amran open to specific destinations until they can be disabled on the Cape Amran side. Citizens of Cape Amran are urged to immediately leave their houses if they have not already, and make their way to the nearest ship or Waygate as quickly and calmly as possible. If the nearest Waygate has been disabled already, there will be forces present to direct you to the nearest active Waygate as long as possible."

The map zooms in to show the seashore map of Cape Amran, a red, blinking dot right on the waterfront on the south side of the small city, "The Citadel has informed us that the Beachfront Waygate will be the last rallying point if all other Waygates are lost. They will hold it open as long as humanly possible." Treena takes a breath as her worried features fill the screen once more, "We will continue to trust in the Six that they will see through to safety as many of the people of Cape Amran as possible, and that the Crone and the Sage will watch over those who cannot escape."

Destruction has come to Cape Amran. Once a moderately prosperous tourist and fishing town, a good third of the city is now engulfed in flames, especially on the north end of town. Hostiles have overrun nearly the entirety of the town, and are steadily pressing their way southward. Already the last vestiges of a rearguard have been pressed to within sight of the Boardwalk Waygate, and they are being swept under by a tide of Hostiles. That leaves nothing but an unsteady stream of civilians between the Waygate and the Hostiles. The Waygate opens to one of the Isles of Terran, where members of the Watch are desperately guiding refugees out of the way and standing by to guard the Waygate from the other side if it is overrun.

The scene outside the Waygate on one of the smaller Isles of Terran is chaos. Refugees are streaming through the Waygate from Cape Amran, carrying what few possessions they've been able to grab in their haste. There is a cacophony of sound, so much so that the Watch Captain standing just behind the Waygate has to shout even within her helmet to make herself heard to the scratch group of volunteers waiting with her. She holds a heavy-duty computer key, like an oversized thumb drive, in her left hand, "Sergeant Maxwell will be going through with you to deactivate the Waygate. He'll prep it, then hold as long as he can. But that Waygate has to come down. There is no other option. Are there any questions?" By the woman's shouted tone, she doesn't expect there to be.

Lady Sir Agnes Peake knows that this very well may be a one way trip with no return ticket. She told her squire, and Jarek, that she intended to go, and the concerns thereof, and was surprised they insisted on joining her. If she is going to be trapped on this side of a Hostile infested waygate, at least she will be in good company. The tall female knight is in her armor, gold in color, and fashioned to resemble that of old earth mythic knights. "I will stay to make sure the Sergeant gets home safe," she states, before closing her helm and sparking up her AI, Winnie.

Kaedin has his helm on, and his sword at the ready, his Armor's AI is set for the battle, and he has been able to make haphazard 'good bye' letters to his family just incase. "No question's Captain, Momoko, you ready?" he asks as he places a hand on her shoulder. "If it gets rough for you, get behind me, your medical skills will be more valuble then a kill count from you."

Adrenaline flows through the veins of Sir Carys Morgan. Always battle ready, the newly minted Knight is covered in dark armor from head to toe. Her heavy breathing warms the inside of her helmet where a thin sheen of sweat glistens on her skin. Her head tilts upwards to listen to the Watch Guard's shout. Her instructions are clear. Carys is prepared for anything. Let the show begin.

The buffed and glossy exterior of Kassandra's white and gold armor reflects the light as she moves, shifting her weight from one foot to the other to test her balance and warm up her muscles. Being relatively unacquainted with the rest of the group, she is silent as she listens to the orders and moves in behind the rest.

The Rovehn Knight is almost those waiting to be deployed to the other side of the gate. He is adjusting his helmet and bardiche. He is close to Kassandra — the only other Valen here. Those of the Vale have to stick together. "You're looking quite lovely today, Sir Kassandra," he says, though the usual flirtation of his tone has diminished slightly.

If the hostiles get hold of a Waygate, Spikka along with all of Haven becomes evermore threatened. That Agnes already planned to go, means that Jarek defies the norm and places himself next to her, intent on making sure she comes back with him alive and in as much of one piece as possible. He looks to Agnes now, "Mind your step my love. Maya, start up sequence Gamma, patch me through to Kae." when the comm clicks open, "Hey Knucklehead Orelle, keep alive and come a fight… Twin Vipers?" he asks. His armor shifts slightly as various locks are tested and gaps are opened and closed to check the suit's systems.

Sergeant Maxwell stands stiffly nearly in his Watch-issue gloss-black light combat armor, his purple and gold Hard Light shield already ignited, and a spear attached to his back. He takes the key from the Captain, the stiffness of his movements betraying his utter fear. If his face was visible behind his helmet, white would undoubtedly be visible all around his pupils.

all armored up and ready to go Chiron walks beside Agnes, his knight. This would be the first time that Chiron encounters hostile's, so he's a bit nervous, but excited, never the less. His sword is sheathed behind his back and his hammer in his left hand. "We will make sure the Sergeant get's home safe." He adds after Agnes puts her visor down. "Wherever she goes, I go."

Momoko is busy checking suit systems and preparing a goodie bag of medical supplie. A little bit of pain relievers, a little bit of bandages. Maybe some surgery supplies, you never know what you'll need in the thick of battle. When Kaedin comes over there's a nod, "I'm not sure I'll have much chance to put my doctoring to use there Kaedin. And sides', don't worry about me. If I get in a bad situation, I'll just bring them over to you and we'll take them out together." Medical bag prepared, just in case, she wraps it around her back and picks up a helm, "Also, Odette will kill me if I leave you behind alone, so I'm with you whatever you choose." Helmet equipped and she switches over to comms, "Let's do it! Orelle!"

"Winnie, full defense for the breach through the Waygate, then mark friendlies and hostiles within range," Agnes orders her AI. The Knight Lieutenant unsheathes her sword, leaving it at long sword status, as a hard light shield flickers into being on her left arm. She toggles her comm to the one shared with Jarek and Chiron. "Get through, assess, secure the area for the Sergeant, then we defend until he gets the job done." She doesn't ask her squire to stay back or behind them. He was in the military before he choose the path of Knighthood. She moves to set a hand on Maxwell's shoulder. "Steady, man. You have some of the finest in all of Haven to protect you."

Kaedin smirks and nods to momoko. "Reach for the stars…" he says before he blinks at his comm. "Yes Jarek, lets take point, everyone else can usher civilians out… and i want to see if we can get any combatants back throug hthe way gate… I'm staying behind… Apex, Dual Sinc with Maya, allow double vision proggram.. mark allies as green, enemyes as red, Momoko is Blue and Jarek is white." he says with a nod before he twirls his sword and heads for the waygate, he doesnt want to waste time talking, just killing and saving.

A faint buzz accompanies Kassandra's movements as she deploys her hard light shield and unhooks her axe from its holster. She starts at the sound of the Rovehn's voice, turning her head in his direction. Inside her helmet, her eyebrows arch upward in surprise. "Sir Lionel, I had thought myself a lone Valen in this contingent. I am relieved to see you, to say the least. Are you ready?"

The Watch Captain looks over to the bantering knights and snarls, "I don't care how many Hostiles you kill. Just shut down that Waygate." She smacks the back of Maxwell's shoulders, and then nods, "I need to sort this clusterfuck out. Now get out there!" And she strides into the ever-lessening flow of civilians pouring out of the Waygate, "Make a hole!" Sergeant Maxwell looks to the volunteers, shuffling around the front of the Waygate where it can be seen that a wave of Hostiles is pouring over the meager rearguard, batches of them breaking through the shattering line to leap ahead and pull down fleeing civilians. "Um… should we go? Like… now? People are dying." But obviously he isn't going to be the first one through the Waygate to the death-side.

"I've come to learn that there is no such thing as being ready… you clench up your ass and set your jaw and jump in and hope that you didn't miscalculate the odds of survival." There is a certain sobriety to Lionel's voice, turning that leonine helmet toward the woman. "Ladies first," he says, gesturing her forward at the Sergeant's "encouragement." He frowns a bit within the inside of his helmet, and he steadies himself as he joins the rush through the gate and onto the Spine where the Hostiles await them.

"Maya, acknowledge Dual Sinc." the AI's voice sounds out the affirmative, then Jarek nods, switching to the shared channel with Agnes and Chiron, "Kaedin and I have spent a long life fighting as a team when on the field… he and I will work together at the front to keep you safe." with that, Jarek's blade flashes all along the Chantry symbols of the knight etched into the greatsword's blood groove, "For the Six, for Haven, They will guide us." he says on open channel before he moves to stand with his cousin and head through the gate with him.

The Khournas Knight is quiet while the banter continues around her. Carys focuses on the Watch Captain and quirks and unseen brow. Her hidden lips smirk as she mentally prepares herself for the chaos that awaits them. A glance to the left, then to the right. No one familiar is spotted immediately and sometimes it is best to go into battle the lone wolf. Her hand lightly fingers the pommel of her sword - her lover for the night. Heat builds in her belly and the lust for battle makes her ache.

"Right then," Agnes says, as the Captain gets uppity. She moves in line behind Jarek and Kaedin, making sure she's close to Maxwell to keep him protected. "Onward."

Rolling her eyes at Lionel's chivalrious gesture, Kassandra eyeballs the Watch Captain for a moment before letting out a sigh of disgust. Immediately she pushes through ahead of the Rovehn to lead the way into the fray, shield up and weapon readied for the first of what will likely be many, many go-rounds with the Hostiles tonight.

Kaedin nods to Jarek as they get ready. He raises his blade and moves forward. "Valen, I want you both to wing out on eather side of Lord Jarek and myself, momoko, stay with Agnes and Chiron, any try and get past us, break their damned spines." he says, having some semblance of a battle plan that will falll apart as the battle goes on, but having a plan does make people less afraid of the comming battle.

"Understood." Chiron says though the private comm, standing beside Agnes, brandishing his hammer. "We'll hold out as long as we can."

Momoko nods at Kaedin, "You know, that Fear of Death is gonna hold you back. Everyone's gotta die, whether it's today or not is up to the gods." She brings her metal clad fists together in a thump, "And I for one feel like dying right about now ain't such a bad thing. So, with that said, let's just go fight a clusterfuck of a battle!" Then to her Ai, "Hey Rin, do that thing, where you mark people in colors and what not." And she follows alongside Kaedin.

There are perhaps a hundred civilians still racing across the grass from the outskirts of the city toward the north-facing Waygate. The arch stands on a small patch of concrete right where the grass transitions to sand. The water is off to the right, the beach running north and south at this point. Immediately to the right is a boardwalk pier running out into the water, a single listing pleasure cruiser at the end of it. Behind the Waygate is nothing by open sand and grass before the coast curves around to the east and the land rises to wilderness — and eventually either Beacon or Khar-Mordune — to the south or west.

Lionel frowns over toward the Orellean. "I'm not against Hostile spine breaking," he says with a touch of dryness. "But, our duty is to the civilians first and foremost. We hold the Hostiles back as long as we can to get as many refugees as we can out before the 'gate blows." He is moving while he's talking, however, and when he steps out onto the field, he realizes just how chaotic this is going to be. He grimaces to himself, and relinquishes a soft prayer. Then he steps up, bringing his bardiche to bear as he steps up to the closest Hostile soldier.

Agnes eyes Kaedin and toggles her comm. "Sir Kaedin, thank you for your rousing speech. Of note, killing hostiles is tertiary in this mission, behind closing the Waygate and protecting civilians. Sergeant Maxwell and his data key are priority, keep them safe. Protect the civilians and get as many of them out as possible before the gate closes."

"Knucklehead, we're tag teaming on point… we'll be killing plenty." he flips open the comm, "Killer Instinct and I will hold point as your first line of defense. You know the mission, you listen to Sir Agnes or her superiors." With that Jarek raises his greadblade in honor to the Six and prepares for the onslaught.

Agnes moves through the Waygate and she steps in front of Sergeant Maxwell, raising her hard light shield to cover him as they move towards where he needs to work. A sword-bearing Hostile swings at her and its blade clangs off her breastplate without penetrating it. She swings back at it and scratches up the armor on its left arm. "Chiron, cover his other flank!" she calls over the comm to her squire. "May the Six guard you, Jarek," she adds quietly.

There is a flash of a dark, tempered blade. The monoedged bardiche slices through the Hostile's chest, drawing with it a splatter of rich and dark blood. Lionel looks over his shoulder to the civilian he just happened to step in front of just before she would have met her own fate. "To the Ways, go, go, go!" Then the Mane turns his lion-headed helmet toward the Hostile soldier once more, stepping back a touch to strengthen the next blow. He glances over toward Kassie as if to check in on the noblewoman and then onward he goes.

Kaedin comes in at the first hostile he spots ,and manages to hit it in the arm, before the axe comes up to cleave into his hand. "FUCK!" he says as he moves around to take a swing at the hostiles neck. "That's going to hurt like a sumbitch in the morning." Hell it hurts now, but he isnt going to say that.

Carys moves with the others through the Waygate. Her sword comes up as she lunges forward right into an oncoming Hostile. The sound of metal rings around her; the clash of the battle has begun. She misses the enemy's core and winds up slicing into its hand. The Hostile is quick on the defense and comes around to return the favor, but misses Carys as she dodges.

One must hope that there is someone around with enough wits to be funneling civilians to safety. As it is, keeping the Hostiles at bay is going to consume the entirety of Kassandra's attention. Nevertheless, if she spots a civilian in her path, she barks out a loud "TO THE WAYS!" while also trying to keep from becoming a corpse. Dodging an enemy blade, the Valen pivots on her heel and returns with her own strike; it's minor, but it's a start.

The symbols of the Knight radiate out a wicked red as Jarek's sword cuts into the clavicle of an attacking hostile. "Back Devil's heretic." he challenges and slides his blade out for the next strike, a marker on his screen blinks once to indicate Kae taking damage, Jarek only cares about damage done if Kaedin actually complains about it… that's when it's serious.

Momoko follows through with Kaedin and Co, striking at their target only to find out that she probably should have spent more time training strength rather than being fast, "Watch out Kaedin! No use getting killed! That was a joke!" Then to the enemies at large, "Fight on!"

The hostile that attempted to hit Agnes finds Chiron's hammer finding his arm as the squire says, "Sure thing, Sir! We'll make them pay!" The adrenaline of combat finally getting to him as he moves to the other side of the hostile.

The Hostiles keep swarming forward, several of those that have burst through the thin and wavering line of House Amran soldiers turning to face the newcomers. But only those who are actually attacked by the Havenites pick them out, the others cutting down fleeing civilians as they go. 100 becomes 95 just that quickly as one civilian has his head crushed, another is spitted on the point of a glaive, another cut down by an axe, a fourth run through with a spear, and a fifth is hamstrung by a Hostile Elite, who then takes its time leaning down to rip the man's head — and part of his spine — from his shoulders, spraying a welter of blood across its armor.

The Elite towering over Kassandra brings its lucerne hammer around, missing the white-and-gold clad Valen and looking down at the blood starting to trickle down its right arm. "We are at the Ways, Abandoner." The other Hostiles clash and fray with the Havenite volunteers, not pressing particularly hard, oddly enough, merely looking to pin them in place while the mass behind them catches up.

Sergeant Maxwell steps aside quickly, plugging the key into a half-hidden slot at the base of the Waygate's arch and starting to tap out commands, "One minute." Even as the Sergeant begins his work, five more civilians flee, a family of four and a lone teenage girl.

<COMBAT> Hostile20 attacks Agnes with Sword - ARMOR on Right Hand stops the attack!
<COMBAT> Agnes attacks Hostile20 with Sword and MISSES!

Agnes advances on the Hostile harassing her, forcing it back a few steps so a pair of civilians with a small child can rush past through the Waygate. "Hurry, hurry!" she urges the Havenites as they near. She toggles her comm. "Whatever civilians do not make it through, we defend to our last breath, understood?" She cranes her neck. "Maxwell! Are there boats we can get anyone left behind on?" TING! She misses a sword lunge at the Hostile and it bats at her armored right hand ineffectively in reply.

Carys is involved in a torrid dance with her Hostile. Once more her sword swings around and connects with the enemy's abdomen. She can feel the tremble from its armor vibrate up her arm. The woman shouts in frustration beneath her helmet and quickly ducks out of harms way. The Hostile's sword slices through the air with rapid movements but cannot land a hit.

Kaedin is glad that the next attack missed, as his own sword slices int othe hostiles neck. "Jarek, finish this one…" he says as he then moves over to engage with another hostile only a step away from him. "We need to get thease hostile bastards off the civillians, I suggest we spread out." he says as he moves in for an attack.

"Agreed Kaedin, fan out a bit… I've got this one." and Jarek certainly steps up loomingly before it to take its attentions, "Come on heretic, make my day, fall to my sword quickly so I can send the rest of your filth back to the black of the dark one." His glowing symbol'd blade raises into an aimed strike.

Pain sprints up his nerves as the Hostile's spear pierces Lionel's dominant hand. He gives an instinctive cry of pain at the successful strike, but it is immediately rewarded with his own. The curved blade of the bardiche sweeps up with a precise strike across the Soldier's chest. It severs faux musculature and draws forth another light smattering of blood. The Mane presses forward, opening up the gap for more refugees to spill through. There is a stopwatch ticking by the fraction of seconds. How long can they hold, how many more can they save.

Momoko hits the guy in the armor again for nothing. Fists ain't what they used to be apparently. Still, Kaedin wants them to fan out, "Okay, Fanning out!" There's a guy with a polearm, as good a target as any she supposes. Hi ho!

"Damn their armor is thick!" Chiron exclaims as he swings his hammer again, this time finding the hostile's left arm. He looks over to see more refugees running toward the waygate. "Hurry up! Get to the gate!" He shouts to the civilians, preparing for another attack against the hostile.

Kassandra's giggle burbles up unexpectedly as she makes better contact with her mark, slicing into the Hostile's abdomen with the blade of her axe. Her merriment is short-lived as the clank of the Hostile's polearm on her helmet leaves a mark and jars the Valen knight. She buys time by circling around, scanning her surroundings quickly with one arm out to scoop any stray civilians back behind her. She nearly stumbles over a woman frantically dodging through the fight to get to the Waygate but surges forward in an attempt to push back the edge of her combat zone near Lionel to free up space for refugees. "Understood, sir," she barks back into the comm.

The line of House Amran troops begins to falter even further, and more of the Hostiles begin to bleed through, another five civilians flee through the Waygate, as others sprint or stumble across the rolling grass toward the Waygate, screaming pleas at the troops fighting around its entrance to protect them, to save them, to take their children.

And ten more of the fleeing civilians get no chance to become refugees, cut down, flayed by high frequency pulses, or pierced by crossbow bolts. The Elite with the greatsword throws the head of the civilian it tore apart at the cluster of Jarek, Momoko, and Kaedin, stalking in their direction and casually hamstringing another fleeing civilian, who is then speared by one of the following Hostiles. The Elite facing Kassandra staggers back at the strike, but it does not falter, rushing forward to meet the Valen knight again. As the Havenites spread out, the Hostiles who have already broken through begin to focus in on them, clumping around there.

Maxwell does not even look up at Agnes' question, "Little busy here, sir." Indeed, a holographic display flickers over the recessed console, datastreams flowing past as the Watch Sergeant begins the shut-down procedure.

Agnes seethes inside her armor at the sight of the civilians being slaughtered like cattle. She jukes to one side as the Hostile charges her with its sword, and smacks it on its hand in return. "Winnie, drop shield, activate greatsword." Her sword extends to a two-handed size as her hardlight shield winks out, freeing up her left to balance the blade.

There is a jarring moment when the Hostile spear slams into Lionel's chest, though it is not followed up by blood or pain. The Rovehn steps up to swing his bladed polearm once more, but this time there is a whoosh of air as it slices past the Hostile's chest once more. The Mane recovers quickly, taking another pursuing step forward to drive the Hostile back and to keep the gap to the Waygate clear.

Carys cannot get a good shot on the Hostile. While her aim is a bit higher, an attempt to dodge gets her sword on the Hostiles left arm. This leaves her chest open and unprotected. The Hostile's sword slams against her chest, throwing the Knight off balance, but her armor saves her ass, or chest rather. Their Tango is turning into something of a Paso Doble. What this hostile doesn't know is that its her bull and she the matador!

The hammer to his hand breaks a finger… but Maya quickly stiffens that digit so that Jarek is constantly giving the bird to his enemy. The bone will need to be reset later, but luckily Kaedin thought to bring his doctor along so this shouldn't be a problem later. His own sword just barely misses the things head but that isn't enough, not even the light hit to his chest. He turns at the second hostile but faints with that move as he whips his blade again at the first, intent on killing it.

Kaedin takes a cut to his chest and frowns as the hostile he is up against dodges him. "How you holding up cousin?" he says. "Momoko, you doing okay?" he continues to ask as he moves in to clash once again with the hostile.

Momoko decides that maybe, even if she's bad at it, swords might be a better choice. When her latest punch doesnt make it through armor either and she gets a scrape on her chest, she pulls the sword at her side and brandishes it at the enemy, "I'm okay Kaedin, I think I'll use what you taught me for a bit."

From the corner of her eye, Kassandra can see the Hostile bearing down on Lionel but doesn't have time to warn him. Her own target rushes at her as she pushes forward, but his blow skids off of her armor and provides the momentum she needs to lodge her axe blade in its chest. With her backwards jump, she dislodges the weapon and brings it around, hefting it in her hand and taking a moment to breathe deeply before she's at it again. On her periphery, a second Hostile joins their tete-a-tete, giving Kassie a second target to dodge. "Shiiiit."

Chiron flinches as a hostile with a bludgeon connects with his dominant hand. The assault on his hand causes him to miss his intended target, but just barely. "By the Six!" He exclaims, his hand stinging a little.

As the Hostiles focus on the knot of Havenite volunteers, more of the civilians are free to run through the growing melee, ten of them slipping through the Waygate and into the ready arms of the Watch on the other side.

Sergeant Maxwell half-turns his head, calling out, "Thirty seconds!"

It's not all good news, however, as the last remnants of the Amran line shatter, the survivors joining the mad flight toward the Waygate. More and more of the first group of Hostiles are turning their attention to the Havenite defenders, but with the failure of the Amran line, there is a second wave descending on the civilians, and the first of that group is starting to kill civilians as Hostiles can move a good bit faster than civilians carrying their meager belongings… another ten civilians are cut down in flight.

<COMBAT> Chiron attacks Hostile20 with Bludgeon - Moderate wound to Chest (Reduced by Armor).

<COMBAT> Hostile26 has been KO'd!

"Chiron, Jarek, report status!" Agnes barks into her comm. She swings her sword two handed down at the Hostile that just seems too agile for The Bear. It's armor bounces the blade off it with a clang, just before she ducks below the creature's own sword strike.

More wounds to his hands, and Jarek looks to Kaedin. "We need to press these back faster Kae. Form up again, lets cut them down then fight to those priests!" after Agnes' bark, he switches over, "I'm fine love, Kae and I are taking the fight to them… keep the light on for us." and with that he whirls through the hail of blows that beleager the Knight while arching to attack his hostiles again.

Out of nowhere, an arrow comes whizzing right by Carys' face. It completely misses her and throws off her focus on her attack. Both the Knight and the Hostile are getting tired of this kind of foreplay. "Enough!" She shouts at the Hostile with a sneering growl. She pushes in to attack again.

Another forward step sends Lionel driving his bardiche deep within the belly of the Hostile soldier. He jerks the bladed head upward, and there is a satisfying sound deep within the Hostile's armor that tells the Rovehn he has done his duty. He tosses the body aside in a simple gesture, the nearly halved Hostile collapsing into a pile of blood, armor, and entrails. He doesn't even take the moment to relish in his success, charging forward the needed strides to intercept the Elite that Kassandra continues to hold at bay.

Kaedin twirls his blade. "Jarek, go for the throat?" he asks as he takes another hit to his hand. "Damnit all…" he says as he frowns and decides to join his cousin. "Thease ones are better trained then the other rabble we have killed. Agreed, take them down and then we can take this serpent's head."

It's a wonder that Kassandra manages not only to evade her newest attacker, but score a hit on the older. Again and again she drives her axe into his chest, but still the Hostile will not fall. Her frustration mounts, but she clamps it down to keep from letting it drive her off balance. Instead, she backpedals a few steps to bring both Hostiles into her field of vision to engage them each directly. Only one can be a target, though, and she opts to go for the Hostile bleeding from its chest.

Momoko switches to sword and slices up the opponent's neck easily but not without giving up some of her chest armor as the enemies polearm pins her in the chest.

"I'm fine sir Ag-" Chiron says before being interrupted by a Hostile's hammer to the chest. The attack knocked some of the wind out of him. He gasps for air, his chest in pain. He swings his hammer at the hostile with the sword and manages to hit it in the chest rather hard. "I'm ok." He replies, this time a little more weakly. "I'm ok."

Suddenly, the frequent shrieks of High Frequency Pulses grow a great deal more pointed, as one wash of shaking, tearing sound spreads across Agnes' breastplate, and another lashes at Sergeant Maxwell. The priests are no longer focusing on the House Amran soldiers and the fleeing civilians. The Hostile bleeding out at Lionel's feet, twitching slightly as it scrabbles for its guts, is not the first to fall in Cape Amran, but is is the first to stain the cement of the Waygate's pad with its blood.

Sergeant Maxwell screams with pain as the High Frequency Pulse lashes him, twitching and jerking with pain. The crossbow bolt to the back doesn't help things, even if it fails to penetrate his breastplate, it still drives him into the side of the Waygate with a thud. His far-too-rapid breathing can be heard on the comm, panic bleeding through his voice, "Keep them off me!"

Another ten civilians get through, but another five are cut down as they flee, sliced, smashed, or just cut down and left to bleed out, crying piteously on the sandy grass.

The Elite facing Kassandra — and now Lionel — is staggered and battered, but it refuses to fall, still fighting on with its heavy polearm despite the damage to its armor and body beneath. The other Elite remains between Jarek, Kaedin, and the next wave, unyielding despite the Havenites' attempts to bull past it. And the Soldiers of the second wave are closing fast, catching up to the civilians and the melee beyond even as their fellows fall upon and butcher the last fleeing Amran soldiers.

A cry goes up from among the Hostiles, wordless and bloodthirsty, as the Amran line breaks.

Agnes shouts "DO NOT BREAK FORMATION!" into the comm.

"It's the priests!" Agnes shouts to Maxwell. "They're out of range, it's a sonic attack!" She puts her mass between him and the Hostiles as best she can. Another wave of sonic energy washes over her, but slithers off her armor without penetrating. She jerks to one side to avoid a chop from the Hostile in front of her, and her blade does nothing but scratch the armor at its throat.

Kassandra is not about to break formation, and when her last blow is delivered to the Hostile she lets out a shriek of glee at seeing it drop for the moment. She has time to waver, to watch as the swarm closes in on them before she grits her teeth and turns to the next target whose bludgeon whiffed right by her with her previous lunge. Inside her suit she is sweating and breathing heavily, but she grits her teeth and bears down on her mark. "Holding, sir!"

Carys is still in a defensive stance but it's not really getting her anywhere. She holds back this hostile from getting any further and nicks him on the chest.

The blade of the second hostile cuts into Jarek deeply, slashing through plate to open a wound on his abdomen. Agnes' bellow to stay in formation blurs slightly as he pushes on… though his grip on his sword loosens slightly as Maya works the suit's inner parts to hold him together. He's still bleeding, and his swing goes wide. He looks to Kaedin, "Fuck this shit… lets just slaughter the damn things one by one." then he turns back to his second opponent the one who'd taken the time to greet him so damn nicely. Sore-optimist Jarek decides to show up, "We'll have a great fucking day, watching you bleed into the ground." he drawls at the thing.

Kaedin grunts. "I'm still having abit of trouble wit hthis one.. AH you bastard… that's odette's pilllow you ass!" he says as he is sliced in the chest, not really carring who knows what about what he does, he moves in to attack again. "Well, we still have to take thease out, then we kill together. is that damn waygate closed yet?"

"Sir," Lionel says in passing to Kassandra as the Elite falls under their combined efforts. He does not linger long with the Valen knight, immediately launching his attention to the next threat. His bardiche is swung around a bit, and the Mane readjusts his grip as he moves in after the Priest blasting poor Sergeant Maxwell.

taking another blow from the Hostile's hammer Chiron blacks out for a second. Be it adrenaline or the will to keep fighting he shakes his head, shrugs it off and hits the hostile once more. Taking a survey of the battlefield he charges over to go help Momoko, who seems to be in a bit of trouble.

Momoko is still trading blows with the polearm guy until the spear or whatever he's using manages to find a good cut up in her chest and puncture something, which sends her to the ground once the spear is removed.

The Elite facing Jarek tilts its head to one side, "You are bleeding quite profusely. Do you require medical assistance?" Did the damned Hostile just taunt a Havenite?

Sergeant Maxwell is slammed in the back of the helmet by another blast of compressed high frequency sound, once more knocking his head into the Waygate, and this time tearing his helmet entirely off to reveal short-cropped blond hair rapidly getting stained by blood from a scalp-wound. Luckily, the pickup in his gorget still carries his voice to the others, although it is desperately slurred, "Fifteen… um… what's it… minutes? Seconds? Almost gottit." Hello concussion city, population, Sergeant Maxwell.

The rest of the Hostiles rush forward on the faltering Havenites, one raising its lucerne hammer high over Momoko, only to have to shift its attention to Chiron when the squire comes barrelling in. The Hostile who had previously been attacking Chiron finds itself under assault from Agnes, and is forced to defend itself rather than chase after the squire.

There are only perhaps a score of civilians left dodging away from Hostiles and trying desperately to pick their way through the melee to the Waygate.

There are spears and swords coming at Carys with purpose and the one Hostile she's been tangling with is still on its feet. This battle infuriates her to no end. She starts to get heated and becomes more and more aggressive. Their skills in art of sword play are exceptional and it seems Carys is paired up with her match. She needs to turn on the heat to get him to go down.

"Medic!" Agnes shouts, "Winnie, flag Chiron for the medic," she instructs her AI. She turns on the creature attacking her squire and goes all out momma bear on the Hostile. "Chiron, back off, get that tended to!" she insists on the comm. She strikes the Hostile who was on her squire in the neck and finally penetrates armor, but in return she takes a polearm to the belly from yet another one. She staggers back, and sees Maxwell go down. "Dammit!" She moves to try and get him back on his feet to finish the job.

As the hostile dodges, Jarek stepspins past it and motions for Kaedin to follow… his hand taking a slight smacking in the process. He makes for the priests that keep sending waves of sound at the troops… primarily the premier. Distract the priests… hell, distract the elites too… try to drag them with him and Kaedin. "Killer Instinct… time to live up to the name, and earn me one just like it." he quips as the heads at one of the tentacle freaks with his sword ready.

"Fuck," Lionel says over the comms. "Maxwell down, Maxwell down. Need someone to finish the sequence." The Mane is busy with his own targets as the sword-wielding Hostile tries to cut a hole in his chest. He turns sharply toward it, dropping his focus on the Priest to prepare to slash the Soldier in turn.

Kaedin blinks. "The medic is down!… SCREW THIS!" he says as he pushes past the hostile he was just fighting and makes a bee line for one of the preists, "Get that gate closed… Six be with me, guide my blade… The viper strikes…" he says as he moves in a mad rush with his cousin.

"Damn it all to hell!" Kassandra spits blood inside of her helmet as the blow to the head not only dents her gear but inadvertently cuts her scalp. The blood in her mouth is simply from biting down on her tongue in the process. Seeing stars, the Valen staggers a few steps and misses her target, catching herself with one knee on the ground before she can topple completely. She whips her head to and fro, trying to get a lock on Maxwell through the blur of activity, but her screen shows a wobbly target flag behind a mixed group. Growling, the Valen knight can only push herself back onto her feet and return her attention to her target before he has a chance to lop off her head while she's busy people-watching.

Another lash of sonic energy washes over Maxwall, and he spasms, even as a little holographic green light pops up at the side of the Waygate, just above the key-drive. Evidently, even as the Watchman collapsed, blood leaking from… well… any orifice or near-orifice on his head… he completed the sequence, and now the Waygate just needs a single command to collapse. That would, however, leave the last ten civilians without any place to go. And the Havenite soldiery in the middle of now enemy-controlled territory.

Hostile numbers are starting to tell now, and the Havenites are well and truly surrounded, with one of them on the ground already and several looking like they could fall at any moment.

At the last second, when it's clear in her visor that Maxwell is down, Kassandra spins away from her enemy target and bulls her way through toward the gate. "I'm on it, sir! Lionel, watch my back! I'm headed to the gate to finish this shit," she growls into her comm, ducking beneath a swinging weapon and scurrying toward the downed man and the Waygate. Should there be no interference or opposing order, the Valen knight is prepared to push the button that will terminate the gate. She will p-push it real good.

In an attempt to protect Momoko, Chiron gets stabbed in the chest with the polearm that the Hostile over her was wielding. His in all kinds of pain, and his vision begins to blur. "Agnes, we need to get Momoko up. I can't leave just yet." He shouts, dropping to a knee, seeing if she can get the woman up.

<COMBAT> Agnes treats Momoko:
< Right_Arm (Moderate): unsuccessful

<COMBAT> Jarek has been KO'd!
<COMBAT> Jarek spends a luck point to keep fighting!

"Jarek!" Agnes cries out. She is so distracted by the private message that was sent to her, that she fails to treat Momoko's wound very well. "Chiron, get her through the gate. I'm getting Jarek," she snaps over her house comm, before toggling to general. "Kassandra, get that gate closed! Retreat, everyone who can, back through the gate before it shuts down!" She rushes towards Jarek.

It's the same swordsHostile that just won't let up the fight. Carys takes on an aggressive stance and goes in for the kill. Instead, his armor soaks up most of the damage to his chest. Unlike that other sonuvabitch who wails on the Khounas Knight and sends her rattling backwards. Her breathing becomes ragged as she clutches her chest.

Kaedin frowns as he manages to hit one hostile, and survive a blast to the chest. When jarek goes down, he blinks and decides that a change of tactics. "Cousin, get out of here." He says as he splits his blade into twin blades and stands against the hostiles. "Everyone out…" he says as he tried to back his cousin away from the hostile.

"Anges, don't you dare die." Chiron quips. "I'm not leaving you." He continues, looking down at Momoko, "Come on, My Lady. The Sergeant is dead. We need to close the gate!" He says grabbing her arm to help pull her up, just barely dodging another attack from the spear.

"Kae ni-" was all that Jarek gets out before the sound pulse slams into his chest, knocking him back into the elite's sword. His chest armor crumples in circular patterning where the blast smashed into him. Then the blade ruptures his back plates. He slumps to the ground, a name on his lips before he pushes himself up and faces the tentacle freaks, "You see before you the epitome of the Knight's honor, courage, and duty. Know that the Six watch over me… for all the wounds you inflict I still stand to defy your devil's plan." he's gained a stoic resolve until he hears Agnes' voice, "NO! Agnes, get back… go…" then Kaedin cuts him off and takes up defending him. He turns around to face the elite. "Maya… defensive." before his vision faulters and his sword dips to the ground to support him as he slumps against it.

"EVERYBODY! MOVE!" Lionel bellows through his helmet, the vocorder neatly embracing the roar. He sweeps his bardiche around to look intimidating to allow as many through the Ways as possible. The lion hair on his helmet catches a bit of breeze each time someone passes him. His stance is defensive all the while.

"There is no 'out' this way. The gate is down," Kassandra reports on the open comm, and although her tone is light the words are heavy. She ignores the flutter of nerves in her stomach at the realization that their easiest escape is gone as the Waygate flashes brightly, pulses, and then disappears. Beyond the half-ring that was once an active gate the unoccupied portion of the beach stands serene in juxtaposition to the battle. She only has a moment to admire the view before she jumps forward and pulls out her axe again, ready to lash out at any Hostile before it's time to beat their retreat down the beach. Rather than lead the fray away, however, she remains behind while the wounded and any remaining civilians who could possibly keep up are sent first.

Agnes slings Jarek's arm over her shoulders, ignoring her own wounds, and toggles the general group comm. "The beach, head towards beacon. If we find a defensible place, we can stop to treat the wounded, otherwise carry them. MOVE OUT PEOPLE!"

Momoko is pulled up by chiron and she does her best to keep up, "Watch out! they're back on us! Kaeden, you don't have my permission to die! Nor Odettes! And she's scarier than me! Just remember that!"

As they move as quickly as they can a pulse of sound grazes Jarek's arm enough to stagger him and he trips face first into the ground. After a quiet moment just hugging the wonderful earth, letting it know all will be okay. He stands and pushes off again, using what strength the Father lends him to keep up. Kaedin went down too, but Jarek is right there to pull him up, "Come on scruffy lookin', we've got women to get back to… can't let the hostiles do their job and kill us."

"Kassandra!" Lionel shouts out toward the Valen. He turns his head sharply as another weapon slices through his armor and flesh, but he is moving fast to grab onto the fellow woman of Cindravale so that he can haul her with him out of danger. He looks over his shoulder a bit. "I hope you like camping," the Mane mutters to the woman.

A cry goes up among the remaining civilians as the Waygate pulses and snaps shut, several falling forward to their knees and raising their arms as if to pray. It does not help, however, as the remaining soldiers and civilians are cut down mercilessly by the pursuing Hostiles. Several pace around the outskirts of the last slaughter, looking for targets, while others press the Havenites closely, chasing after them.

Kaedin gets up. "Pot, kettle, black." Kaedin says as he connects his sword once more and continues his run. "Oh you have it easy, first momoko is going to kill me, then Odette is going to kill me, and THEN i get to get killed by my mother… I'm just glad I got a week to soak up all the shit I gotta deal with… RUN."

Really, it was just a slap on the wrist. Wasn't it? The blow that sends Kassandra to her knees once more may have looked like a glancing one at the outset, but odds are the deep-tissue bruise is causing a radiating pain up her arm that's forcing the girl to see stars. For a minute she cannot even move the fingers in her right hand, and she stares at it in a daze. Lionel's voice is a distant murmur as the roaring in her ears increases; the concussion from a previous blow to the head is threatening to push her into unconsciousness.

But the Rovehn doesn't appear willing to allow that, and Kassie is jerked out of the moment by the fellow knight hauling her to her feet. She grunts her understanding, shaking her head and allowing herself to be dragged along until she gets her bearing again and can move without support. She falls in line with the retreat. "I've got it, Li, I've got it. Fuck, Li - those people…"

Clear sand and grass lie before the fleeing Havenites, although their shadows dance before them as they run, cast by the flickering flames of Cape Amran. The first group is free of the press, but some of the volunteers are still caught within the deadly dance of the Hostiles.

Chiron begins his retreat, but not before getting stabbed once again in the chest. His will to live is greater then the wound he's received, however. "We'll get out of here. I know we well… I hope." He says, the last part was muttered. His breathing is /very/ heavy, as he's probably got a few broken ribs. Regardless, he'll keep running.

Momoko runs along with Agnes in an attempt to put distance between them and the enemy, "I hope the medical supplies are still intact."

Carys follows command and catches her comrades retreating. Her feet cannot move fast enough. She's literally sprinting back with the other soldiers now.

[Combat Instance:] <COMBAT> Momoko has been KO'd!

Agnes feels a sharp, burning pain in her back as a crossbow bolt strikes her between the shoulder blades. She doesn't stop running though, or dragging Jarek with her. She is NOT going to lose her man nor her squire today. NOT TODAY!

Kaedin keeps running even as he manages to avoid getting his by an incomming axe. spotting momoko getting shot in the back, he makes a dash for her and scoops her up into his arms. "Even lighter then Odette." he muses as he makes a mad dash with the rest of them. "Hold on Lil Doc, I'll get you to saftey."

Momoko is down again like a bad case of dominos! One arrow to the boob, check. That was number 57 on her list of things never to happen!

It's probably a good thing that Kassie has returned her axe to its holster, otherwise the unavoidable blow from the Hostile would have rid her of her pretty, shiny weapon. As it is, the armor is dented and the sting of the blow shoots up into her wrist. The Valen hurls rather loud epithets at the Hostiles as she follows in Lionel's wake, attempting to dodge the last one as she breaks through the line and stumbles forward to see the backs of those retreating ahead of her. Gladdened by the sight, she shoves Lionel ahead and pushes onward. "Go, keep going, go, we're almost out of range."

A polearm spike lances into his left arm and he digs in his heels. Hefting his blade and turning towards the hostile, "I have the Six with me… I can stay here, hold them off and buy you all more time." He doesn't look over his shoulder, doesn't give any heartfelt goodbye. It was his duty as a knight to protect, his oath to keep others safe. He stands a stoic guard as he stands to guard their retreat, sword in both hands an breathing heavily. "Anyone who's still running, get behind me and keep a straight line!" he shouts out to the stragglers.

Carys gets the pointy end of a spear or a sword.. Possibly both. Her defenses start to come up, but she's too late. The Knight growls beneath her breath at the throbbing ache in her chest. At least it's a good excuse to go topless for a while.

"Momoko!" Chiron shouts as the woman falls. He stops to pick her up, but Kaedin has already picked her up. He looks over to see a crossbow bolt stuck in Agnes and asks, almost out of breath. "Are you ok?" He says before he begins to cough.

Once Jarek sees that the others are in line and getting out of range, he shakes his head and turns to follow them. Running as fast as his beleagered lungs can handle.

Lionel is hauling right with the others, making sure that none is left behind. He turns to make sure someone has Momoko as they make for the wilderness of the South, and then focuses on the retreat. Though his face is hidden by his visor, it is stoic and sober. No joking this time around.

The Hostiles start to chase after the fleeing Havenites, firing off crossbow bolts and getting in their last licks as the Havenites break free. Most of them slow down at the dead Waygate, starting to swarm around it, but a few continue to lope after the Havenites, following to ensure that they are truly running. And the Priests, well, the Priests are not going to let things go without one more volley of scouring sound.

Agnes slows her pace briefly for a headcount. The team is all present, sans Sergeant Maxwell. She jogs along the other Knights. "Make for Beacon, or Khar-Mordune? Which direction has better chance of shelter, water, and food so we can get patched up and limp home?"

Kaedin keeps running. "Beacon is closer…" he says as he looks down at Momoko. "Momo, wake up… I'm so not kissing you awake." he says as he keeps up with Agnes. "We need to get our medic awake… then she needs to have a look at the others."

"I don't this area well," Kassandra admits, finally managing to catch up to the rest. She is breathing heavily, and she takes a moment to stop and lean down with her elbows propped on her legs. "I am so dizzy," she mutters before straightening and jumping into a run again. "Maybe the medic should have a look at herself. Li, where'd you go?"

Chiron's pace slows as well. He places one arm around his chest while his hammer is in his other hand. In between coughs he says, "My preference is Kar-Mordune." Man his chest hurts.

Lionel is feeling the pain, though his adrenaline is still pumping hard enough that it isn't slowing him down yet. "Beacon," he wheezes. "It is the closest to here." He glances over his shoulder a bit toward where Amran has fallen. His lips tighten a bit, but there is nothing that he can do. He starts fussing with something inside his helmet. Then he reaches out to grasp Kassandra's shoulder. "Easy, Kass…" He glances toward Agnes. "We need to find a place to sit down and patch up."

Momoko snorts a bit, "I'm kind of awake, but I don't think i'd walk very well. Give me a bit more." There's a cough, "Head towards Khar-Mordune. There's a smuggler cache along the way in a valley that we can stop in. Even if it's empty then it's some place safe to hide for a bit. They probably won't find it. But whatever you want to do as a group." Though she seems mostly spent.

"All in favor of Beacon, step back one pace, all in favor of Khar-Mordune, step forward one pace. We'll go with the majority," Agnes says. She steps forward, as the mention of a cache sounds like the shelter would be welcome.

Bringing up the rear, having made sure that everyone was able to make it and didn't need a final stand of the Saimhann to keep them safe. Jarek makes it to the group before half collapsing against his sword, digging the large blade into the ground. "Khar-Mordune should take us along the mountains… I'm no real hunter, but it's something my family does… I'm sure I can make a good attempt at it. I'd be better at hunting than fishing… and the mountains could provide us cover if we run into any resistance. Out here… we're in the open."

Kaedin steps forward, along with momoko being in his arms.

Although ragged and out of breath due to injuries to her chest, Carys steps forward, in favor of Khar-Mordune.

Chiron steps forward, still clutching his chest. This was his first real battle, and he's made it… he thinks. "Steady." Is all he says, looking up at the Peake Knight Lieutenant.

Lionel steps back one pace, though he does loosen Kassandra's shoulder a bit so the woman can vote on her own.

Smuggling? Kassandra looks toward Momoko, but luckily for her the helmet hides her expression of disgust. She steps backward to signal her vote for Beacon, moving to stand beside Lionel.

"Khar-Mordune it is," Agnes states. "We'll see if we can find a place soon to rest and patch up the worst of our injuries, find some food and water, and shelter for the night. Objections?"

Kaedin shakes his head. "Nope, let's get clear of them.. before those damn abominations start to fan out." he says as he begins to move.

Lionel holds lightly to his chest even if it is lower back that has taken the worse of the damage. "No," he wheezes a bit. He braces his hand on Kassandra's shoulder once more before he starts to lead the Knight onward with the group. "I love camping," he says in an attempt of gleeful disdain. Rovehn he might be, but he travels with horse herds and caravans.

"None from me…" Jarek gets out before his slump turns into a topple and he down the knight goes… his armor breaking apart around the chest.

"Really? I fucking hate camping," Kassandra replies to Lionel, not caring if anyone hears her protest. Well, it's not really a protest so much as an irate observation, but adrenaline and a conscussion can do wonky things to a girl's head. She does not resist as Lionel pushes her forward, and instead is willing to follow the group wherever they go. Rather than allowing Li to support her, however, the less damaged Valen slips his arm around her shoulders and helps him along. "Try to breathe easy, Li. We'll get to the — campsite — soon."

As the adrenaline of the fight wears off, Chiron begins to get tired. "I… I think I got one." Chiron mutters, speaking about the hostile with the sword. He gives Kassandra a confused look. "Didn't you -cough- know that we would be in the wilderness for a -cough- few days?" He coughs out.

Agnes steadies Chiron and lets her helmet retreat back into her armor. "You did well, Chiron. I'd also consider it a favor if someone could remove the crossbow bolt from my back." Ow. Ow ow ow.

H.N.N. - Haven News Network
About an hour after the first report, Treena Stardis is back on the air, looking somewhat relieved but still shaken, "Good evening, Haven. The Citadel is reporting that all Waygates out of Cape Amran have been successfully closed. Although the loss of life was great, the forces of House Amran did not give their lives in vain. Perhaps one in ten of them now survives, but they delayed the Hostiles long enough for a scratch force of volunteers to deactivate the Beachfront Waygate — with the volunteers on the other side."

Treena draws in a breath, letting it out slowly before continuing, "The fate of those brave volunteers is unknown at this time. The Citadel reports that they were all badly wounded at the time the Waygate closed, but experts believe that there is a chance they may have successfully broken contact with the Hostiles and tried to escape overland to Khar-Mordune or Beacon. We can only hope and pray that those brave souls have indeed managed to escape. May the Six watch over them."
