The Gardens of Nora - Arborenin, The Spine
While these gardens act as the courtyard between the Heartwood and the Elder Seat, they have managed to obtain a peaceful ambiance despite all the foot traffic. There is a gently angled esplanade that leads up from the Heartwood, interrupted here and there by short segments of stairs. When it reaches the main promenade of the gardens, it flattens out and continues to provide a pathway directly toward the grand doors of the Elder Seat.

Flanking either side of the esplanade are parcels of well-kept garden that are divided by smaller pathways that lead off from the main esplanade. These parcels vary between thick carpets of moss and forest flowers to clusters of wild roses to a very small orchard of fruit trees that bear red apples and pale peaches in the summer. Natives and visitors alike are encouraged to wander throughout the Gardens of Nora — named for the first High Lady of Arborenin, the daughter to Hugh Arboren — but there are also Arborenin guards who equally frequent the area.

June 10, 3013

Standing before one of the parcels of wild roses, examining them casually is a tall man in dark turquoise and cyan. A sword on his hip, likely a good thing given the Hostiles already being confirmed as being found around Arborenin. The young noble looks on a bit longer before leaning over to take a simply sniff of the aroma before turning and continuing a casual exploration of the gardens.

Lorelei is set up underneath a tree. Her dark hair is pulled into a messy sort of bun. She has a book propped up on her knee and is reading, glancing up and around every once in a while. She seems calm and relaxed.

Coming upon a young citizen under a tree Densoric nods and asks, "The friend of the stablehand correct?" in a passive tone, as he faces Lorelei more fully, stopping in his stroll.

Lorelei glances up, smoothing her face. "Yes..I'm friends with Taryn. Did you need something, M'Lord?" She'll close the book, looking up at him with big eyes. She'll pull her legs underneather her, but not move to stand yet.

Densoric says, "Nothing of consequence, there wasn't much of an introduction and you seemed a bit… Put off by my presence. Do you fear the nobility that much, or is there something about me or my House that troubles you so?"

Lorelei raises an eyebrow, "No offense M'Lord, but you didn't give the impression that you really wished to speak to me." She'll tilt her head, clearly having move confidence on her home turf. "you were rather…curt about my poetry."

Densoric says, "You were also largely distant. As to poetry I'll read it and listen to it, but it is a simple matter of preference in the style of art. As one favors a painting over a book or a play over a movie." in a simple, casual tone.

Lorelei frowns slighty, a look that doesn't seem natural for her, "I didn't want to inetrupt you and Taryn. He's working on getting a good job, I didn't know what you were discussing…and then you implied that he was going to be more than a stable hand.." Loree's cheeks flush slightly at the memory. "It was just better for me to go."

Densoric nods and asks, "You care for him then, perhaps even love?"

Lorelei blinks, pulling the book to her chest as she rises, "Of course I care. He's my freind." Her brow furrows, "I don't…He is my friend, I don't want him to have to do anythign he doesn't wish to, for a job. that's all." She's not making eye contact, and her cheeks are still pink though, so it's hard to tell what her feelings for Taryn truly are.

Densoric nods and says, "I would guess otherwise, but I'll admit my perceptions aren't perfect. It is of minor concern regardless. Though as I said before, with me at least you may feel free to say what you wish, no need to lie or be diplomatic I get enough of that from House politics."

Flustered, Lorelei huffs softly, "I…Taryn's just a good freind. That's all." Now she really does sound like she's trying to convice him. A lock of her dark hair has slipped out of the bun on top of her head, and has slipped into her eyes, "Most nobles say that, untill something is said that they don't like."

Densoric says, "I am hard to offend, but as you say. Test your limits at the rate you feel comfortable and you can see for yourself. Though in the company of other nobles may not be the best idea as even if I have no issue with it, they may."

Lorelei flips her hair, making her look her young age, "I understand how to act around Nobles." She seems to not know exactlty what to do with Densoric. Her shoulders slump some, not wishing to be angry with anyone, "Were you looking for something or someeone in particular? Or just wandering the Gardens?" While her voice isn't warm, it's lost that edge it had.

Densoric says, "As I mentioned before, I favor beauty both natural and in art, though of a more visual nature which is why poetry never held my interest much, nothing personal of course. These gardens are a cultivated beauty in a realm of beauty. I've actually not been to the Arborenin before, why I am taking my time while it is still relatively intact before the war strikes in full."

Lorelei's jaw tightens a moment. she doesn't think he's trying to be rud…she'll exhale, loosening her jaw, "The gardens here are beautiful. The Forest isn't safe anymore, but before…it was the best place to go. I loved it." Her voice goes a bit distant and a small smile graces her lips at the end.

Densoric nods and draws a bit closer, a pace or two away and asks, "Tell me then? I am not suited to combat and I'm no fool to test my luck. When the direct fails try the indirect. So if you would, tell me of the forests as you know them. Help me to know what I cannot see with my own eyes."

Densoric moving closer doesn't sem to bother lorelei, in fact she smiles at his request. "Be careful, I may just let you read my poetry." She'll giggle softy the tease in her voice not meant to be mean. "It's as if you can be completely alone, and never, at the same time in the Forest. There's a moment where it's so silent and still, you could swear time has frozen, and others where it's busier than any market place." She's beaming as she speaks, the smell , especially after a rain, it's like life itself."

Densoric obviously is paying careful attention and says, "In ways similar to my own home please continue if you would." Seems she has his undivided attention now.

Lorelei smiles, glancing down to her book, "It's hard to put plain words. The birds sing greater than any radio." she'll laugh softly, "Don't tell Drake Danger that!" looking back up, all her frustartion sems to have melted away, "I always felt I could breath better, in the forest, like the air was better?" I always thought the perfect day would eb to have a horse, picnic and the forest."

Densoric nods and says, "Always favored the air of altitude but then I'm biased in that regard, but you explain it well."

Lorelei nods, "I suppose if we all prefered the same thing, we'd all be very crowded where we lived."

Densoric nods saying, "True enough, but we are all biased in our way. Though i will admit for one accustom to mountains, forests hold a beauty of their own."

Lorelei giggles softly, "I think maybe the Forest has an unfair advantage. It's the best. But everyone's second favorite tnds to be very different." There's a touch of pride in her voice.

Densoric nods saying, "We are all biased to what we know first. I was around your age when I first left home in any noteworthy fashion. I found the capital and the Academ. The bias also guides our future, and I have developed an appreciation of the beautiful in its forms. The forest is your bias, what has your short life guided you to?" in a curious tone.

Lorelei blinks, "I…I don't know for sure. I'd like to help, with the war. but I'm not a fighter…or even a healer. I have no real skills that could help…" She'll look down to her book and start to say something then stop, cheeks flushing again. whatever it was, it was embarrassing to soem extent.

Densoric says, "Speak if you wish, do I seem the type to judge you harshly for a youthful desire?"

Lorelei narrows her eyes slightly, just casue he's old doesn't mean he should talk down to her…Lifting her chin slightly, "I'm considering writting a collection of poems for the soldiers. to carry with them, so they know we appriciate them."

Densoric nods and says, "Sounds like a sound plan, and one at least some of them will enjoy." Seems he noticed the look and says, "Forgive my words, but in truth we are both still young, in ways even I am a child and I am not going to speak of another in terms I would not use for myself. At least informally."

Lorelei watches Densoric a moment, not sure how to take him,"I need to find soemone to back me though. It most likely won't happen. The only person who's ever evn shown real interest isn't reall accessable for me to talk to about it."she'll shrug, "What is your youthful desire then?"

Densoric says, "See what I can before its lost, learn what I can with the time I have, and gain what I can to ensure a legacy. As to the poems, do your work and I'll have a look. If the skill is of note I may consider support."

Lorelei tilts her head, "What will you do with what you've seen and learned?" she's not trying to be mean, just currious. she'll smile softly,"seems like only peple off world are interested." but she4'll nod, "I'll put a few poems together, you can let me know if you like them"

Densoric says, "I will do what I am able with what I've seen and learned, to what betterment I can accomplish. As to the poetry, finish your work, I will look it over when you are done. I know well art cannot be rushed, and a sample gives an idea but if your skill yields a masterpiece of the future then a few samples will pale and may even tarnish the perception before the art is viewed."

Lorelei tilts her head, "What does that mean though?"He wanted honest. "Betterment?" she'll nod, not wanting to get into the symantics of poetry with Densoric.

Densoric states, "Betterment of the peoples of Haven. Surviving the Hostiles, enduring centuries more, and so forth. The longer we survive, the longer are culture is preserved, and the greater the chances of finding a way to defeat the Hostiles for good."

Lorelei nods, "I'm sorry, I just meant, that's awfully vague." she'll give him an apoligetic smile, "Are you wanting to focus on defeating the hostiles?Or Survaial?Or the troops?Or soemthign esle?If you try to do it all, you'll end up doing nothing."

Densoric nods saying, "very astute. In truth I'm vague because my influence and power is limited so until I can figure out how much I'm capable of, what I might have a chance at, I cannot do more then theorize and generalize."

Lorelei nods again, not wanting to be too pushy. "Perhaps you'll find it soon. Maybe we both will." She'll move her hand up to brush that lock of hair that's come back into her eyes.

Densoric nods and says, "Life unfolds as it does, desires simply guide us into the future."

Lorelei laughs, "Now who sounds like a poet?" She'll bite her lip, looking down to the book in her hand"please…please don't say anything to Taryn. I don't know how i feel. He's nice, and I liek him, but…I don't know him well enough to kwo anything esle. I don't want to lose him as a freind, becasue he gets scared of me."

Densoric nods and says, "I can probe if you wish as 'one man to another', to judge his potential interest if you wish. But I can be subtle enough that he won't know I'm asking for you."

Lorelei 's eyes widen. Men do that? Her cheeks flush again, "Oh! No….I…no!that would be….he'd know somehow then hate me!" Her eyes travel around, liek she's afraid Taryn is going to be listening in.

Densoric smirks and says, "That is doubtful. If he views you as a friend he'd back you, if he viewed you with love he'd be more direct, if he didn't care then he simply wouldn't care, or worse be more course. Though i doubt he's the type to be that course."

Lorelei does not look like she believes Densoric, "He's smart. He'd know. He has all of those Ladies after him, there's no way he's even looked at me." she'll shake her ehad, "No…I can't risk that…" She'll bring her book up, almost hugging it.

Densoric says, "And there are those men that humor those they have no interest in to hold out hope for those they do." simply.

Lorelei not getting what Densoric means, wrinkles her nose, "I don't want to be that. I'd rather have no one than be that." She'll take a deep breath and force a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "I won't be a substitute."

Densoric smiles softly and says, "I meant you might be the hope, not the one humored."

Lorelei's browwrinkles and she'll shake her head, "Not against Ladies. I'm aware of what i am and what in offer." She'll shrug lightly.

Densoric states, "You may be a citizen, but Ladies suffer more for such an interest if discovered. To put it more simply I would simply subtly discover if he views you as a friend, or as the 'hope', and then inform you when I discover. To know is to understand, to understand is to act. If he views you as a friend alone, then you can learn to accept that and not ruin your friendship. If he loves you then you will know he has an interest and decide how best you will approach the matter."

Lorelei shakes her ehad again, "It sounded lie they were going to tug of war over him…and I assumed they wanted him as a Companion…"She'll shrug, but is uncomforatbale with this, "I don't think it's a good idea…You are not the subtliest person I've met." She'll sigh, "It's ok…I should probably focus on my poems and handmaiden duties."

Densoric shrugs and says, "It would be foolish at best, stupid at worse of any noblewoman to try with a citizen."

Lorelei tilts her head, but then sighs, "I'm only 18…I've got time. It's not like there won't be others…right?" Biting her lower lip, "It's ok. If it's meant to be, it'll be."

Densoric nods and says, "As you wish, it was simply an offered kindness. I know the outcome two in love can produce."

Lorelei blushes again, she wasn't even thinking that far. "I appricaite the offer, thank you." She'll finger the edge of her book, nervously. "If there's anything i can ever do for you, please let me know."

Densoric nods and says, "I shall keep the offer in mind, though I'm not sure as of yet what boon I could collect from it. But I will say this, you have a sharp mind and a careful word, a good combination in a young woman. Almost makes me sad you were of higher birth, you would make a fine bride."

Lorelei blinksm untill his words actually sink in, "Oh! I…thank you?" she really can't turn any pinker. Her eyes stay downcast though.

Densoric nods and says, "As I said, look to your work, if it proves skilled enough I may well sponsor it or find one who will. As to a boon, I suppose for now if you come across something worthy of note you can inform me, if its value is worthy you can consider your debt repaid. Or at least till I think of something less general."

Lorelei blinks, not exactly aware that she agreed to anything. "I will let you know. I don't think i'll have the collection written for another few months, at least."

Densoric nods and says, "As I said one cannot rush art, take your time and I will wait to read the result when its complete."

Lorelei gives his a thankful smile, glad to be back on the safer topic of poetry than her non love life. "And I will let you know if i hear of anything I think would be of interest for you to pursue."

Densoric nods and asks, "Are your poems concerning war, the forest, or observation of all the Inner Worlds then?"

"Well, Right now? a bit of everything. I'd focus more on the soildiers though, more positive, how what they are doing-sacrificing, how that is known and we appriciate it. And are thankful." Loree smiles softly, "I don't like writing about the war…but it seems I need to."

Densoric nods and says, "It is always better to record what needs to be heard then what one wants to record. At least when it comes to art."

Lorelei nods, "I think that is very true. I want to help, even if that makes me uncomfortable." Biting her lower lip a moment, "I feel like I need to see a hostile…or armor..or soem thing. But that just feels so trivial to ask."

Densoric nods and says, "It isn't much, but it is what I can offer on-hand." he then kneels down, draws his sword in the most passive way possible, and holds it out to be examined. A typical arming sword at a glance, this one however is a well—forged piece, certainly fit for a nobleman of House Larent. A blade of titanium, a hilt with a braided leather grip. A spherical pommel etched to resemble Nubilus from orbit and a straight guard, both guard and pommel are plated in electrum. Also along the flat of the blade on both sides in electrum filigree is the sigil of House Larent located just past the guard. And running along the first quarter of the blades length, filigreed into the blade reads the words "Above the Rest".

Lorelei does not touch the sword, for many, many reasons. but she will tilt her head, she can admire the beauty of it, even if it makes her nervous. She'll reach her hand, but doesn't actually touch the weapon. Raising an eyebrow, "Above the Rest?" she'll pull her hand back.

Densoric nods and returns the blade to the scabbard, the plus side to his knee-length cloak is that it does well to hide a drawn weapon from nearby enforcement, the kneeling helps as well. Besides he means no one any harm anyway and he wouldn't have let her touch the weapon anyway, he has no desire to see her arrested or killed. He then states, "It is the motto of House Larent. A bit literal given our settlements are build above the cloud cover of our home."

Lorelei smiles at his explanation, "Ah…I should have guessed." She'll tilt her head, "Was the sword forged for you? Or passed down?"

Densoric says, "Forged, it was a gift from my mother when I finished my training with the sword. I wasn't very good, but it was the weapon I was best with and she wanted to reward me for the effort as I had so little interest in combat. She also wanted it to reflect our House well, why it has our motto, or sigil, and also the blade is titanium, the ore of which is our chief export. ALso it is a bit of an inside joke as well if you ask me. The electrum is more of a personal touch as she knows I like the look of the alloy."

Lorelei chuckles, "That is a beautiful gift." she'll shake her head softly, the loose lock falling back into her eyes again, "I'm sure you're more proficiant at the sword than you give yourself credit for. It is not alwasy just a man's skill, but what he is protecting. Now that there is a threat, you will do well."

Densoric says, "With the threat arriving sooner then expected, I'm almost considering trying my hand with the sword again to see if I might improve any. I've always favored more political pursuits, but politics aren't likely to stop a Hostile facing you down. As to my skill I believe my instructor said I had the same amount of skill as a common man-at-arms. Not bad but not the best either, knights are far better, such as my Lady Cousin."

Lorelei looks down, "Unfortunatly, there will always be politics that need to be dealt with." She works witht eh Arboren family, she knows. "that will not help in an immediate threat, but this is a long term war, unless we find a way to stop them."

Densoric says, "Doubtful, I'm no master of history, but the studies I had, these wars always take decades to fully work out, though with luck we'll hold our own till they are dealt with." He then gives a bit of a warm, teasing smile and adds, "Who knows, you may live to tell the grandchildren of yourself and Taryn about how scared you were this day." winking in a playful, good-natured way.

Lorelei 's eyes widen and inhale sharply, "Stop that!" But even as she's admolishing him, her lips turn up slightly. she realizes how silly she must seem. Her poor cheeks had just satrted to cool off too! "That's what my poems are for, if I don't survive." Her smile drops at the sober statement.

Densoric smiles softly and says, "A legacy." then stands saying, "We all wish to have one in our own way, and we all do what we can to make one that will endure."

Lorelei frowns, she'd never really thought of it that way, "If i can write soemthign now, to help future generatiosn know that tehy're not alone, not the first to feel this way…is that a legacy, or a duty?" She'll wrinkle her nose, "I didn't eman it to sound conceded. I'm not that good." She'll then smile up at Densoric, the conversation going better than she had hoped when he first walked up to her.

Densoric says, "Legacy. Think of the poets of history, how many of them made their best work with the intent of being famous? How many did so seeking to to simply inspire even if they died broke? One can die without anything of value to their name, yet in future generations their works can inspire greatness in various forms. As I said, no point in rushing your desire, take you time, don't try and create a legacy, just create what you can with the goals you had in mind in regards to those fighting for us all."

Lorelei nods, the smile creeping back, "Oh…so i should look forward to being broke and dieing penniless? there goes my dreams of castles and treasure chests." Her smile turns a bit more serious and she nod again, "I know. I will. I just hope I survive long enough to get it done."

Densoric nods and says, "A little secret? Don't go chasing Hostiles wielding a book." winking playfully.

Officially, can a person die from embarrassment? Loree just stays flushed at this point, "Who kows, maybe we just need to read them some good poetry? Maybe my book will save us all?" It's ridiculous, but she has to say something!

Densoric shrugs and says, "perhaps, and if not it might make for a good make-shift bludgeon a knight could use to save the day." winking playfully once more. A moment more he asks in a curious tone, "Did you not say you were a handmaiden? What does your mistress think of your poems?"

Lorelei laughs, "I better start carrying bigger books then!" Smiling still, she'll shake her head, "Lady eilara says they're wonderful, but I beleive she's being kind.

Densoric nods and says, "I don't believe I recall meeting her, what can you tell me of her?" in a casual, curious tone.

Lorelei laughs again, "That is soemthing I've noticed about Nobles. You'd all rather gossip about each other than actually talk to one another," After a beat, "I do not discuss my Lady with anyone, otehr than she is wonderful to me."

Densoric smirks and says, "I believe you confuse me with my Lady Cousin, I am not one for gossip I favor facts. I ask more due to my ignorance, I don't even know her House. Though it is good one with such a skilled mind is treated well."

Lorelei will conceed a name. With a small laugh, "I work for Lady Eilara Arboren, youngest daughter of hosue Arboren." She'll tilt her headslightly, studying Den for a moment, "She does treat me well. I could not have asked for a better position."

Densoric nods and says, "So why will your Lady Arboren not lend support to your work?"

Lorelei huffs, "She would…she will. I just…would rather do it on my own?" Ugh…that sounds so lame. "I don't want it presented as a Lady presenting her handmaiden's poetry. I want it to stand on it's own." She'll look down again, over at soem flowers, "She's done so much, giving me this position. I don't wish to ask for anotehr favor."

Densoric nods and says, "You wish to be self-reliant but not ungrateful. A 'self-made' woman that doesn't wish to be seen as only having what you have due to your 'friend'. At least I would guess that is the correct term given how you speak of her."

Busted. She'll swallow, "It's not…We played together when we were younger, and she knew that i was turnign 18, so she offered. " Loree nods, "I'd liek to be able to hand her a copy of the book. To show her, not to ask her to help make it happen."

Densoric nods and says, "You want your friend to see what you can do and be proud of you, respect you for your poetry as much as for your duties, there is nothing wrong in taking pride in your work."

Lorelei chews on her lower lip, but nods, looking back over at the flowers, "I don't want her to feel she has to suppoort it." She'll nod slowly, wondering if her dating life would be a safer topic at this point.

Densoric nods saying, "Obligation to a friend and perceived favoritism or outside sponsorship and proof of skill. Good luck in your endeavors then, and rest assured I keep my word. I will read it over when you are done and consider whether I wish to support it, and if not then I may know one who will."

"Thank you." Loree gives Den a bright smile, "I hope to get to talk to you soon."

Densoric nods and says, "ANd you, though I should get back to my observations of the forest, at least as far as I am able." giving a soft smile then turning to be on his way.
