Grand Esplanade — Landing, Imperius
Although the Grand Esplanade is centered on a double lane for ground vehicles and carriages, the majority of the broad street is held for pedestrian use. Smooth pavement extends out around planters that keep vehicle traffic away from people on foot, exposing a broad expanse to the feet of passers by.

The Esplanade leads past scores of little hole-in-the-wall shops and kiosks selling everything from daggers to scarves to jewelry. Light posts are interspersed with the planters, casting a warm glow over the Esplanade at night, while electrostatic shields blur the skies but keep off any rain from above, leaving the Esplanade crowded day or night, rain or shine.

Towering over the Esplanade to the west is the shimmering steel spire of the Citadel, while the Gardens of Erkwin and the Landing Stadium lie to the east. Directly north is the magnificent Palace Towers, seat of House Sauveur.

June 3rd, 3013

The evening has settled into the city, though the city lights have come alive and chased away the night. The setting of the sun has not done much to thin the crowds in the streets, and as the Esplanade is one of the main thoroughfaires of the city. Sitting up on one of the planters dividing the lanes, is a young man dressed in very rustic leathers. His legs hang down as he is eating on a sandwich of some sort and is watching the people walk past them. Taryn is amazed how if you sit long enough you can see people of just about every way of life, every level of society, and all sorts just walking side by side, from lords and ladies of the great houses to bakers, potters, soldiers, knights, all great and small.

Lorelei has been trying to equant herself with different places. She was never an explorer, but now? She needs to be better, more prepared . So she's put on a pretty dress, nothing too ornate. She doesn't have anything like that, and has been exploring. The days grown a bit long, and she may be a touch lost. She thinks she's been by here before? She stop, moving to the side. She just needs to take a moment, she's not yet at the point of asking, how embarrassing! Her eyes sweep the area, sighing softly.Eilara will never let her live this down.

Taryn recognized that dazed look of confusion. It has been a regular fixture for him since he arrived less than a week ago. He hops down from his perch, "I can't guarentee that I can actually help… I'm still new here, but if you're looking for one of the handful of places I actually know, I'll be more than happy to help." He wraps up the left over sandwich and places it into the messenger bag slung over his shoulder before wiping his on his pants legs.

Lorelei 's head dart up, eyes blinking at Taryan, "I…oh. No…I mean…." And with that, her shoulders slump in defeat, "My Lady told me to go wander….I'm afraid I've wandered a bit far." She'll give him a small hopeful smile, "I was hoping to find a place to get something small to eat before trying to find my way home…"She does take note of his clothing, although here isn't any distain on her face. In fact her eyes brighten a touch.

Taryn reaches up and rubs the back of his neck. "Well, where is your home?" He grins, "That would be a good point to start… And there are several good places to grab something to eat… There's even a place down that way that does a pretty good Valen breaded stew."

Lorelei 's cheeks flush a touch pink, "It's…I need to go to Arboren." she'll glance the way he's indicating and there's a small bit of worry that crosses her features. "Do you know of anywhere that has good food that doesn't have meat in it?" She actually sounds a bit sad, like she knows the answer is going to be no. She'll turn back, forcing a smile. Not his fault. "I'm sorry. I'm being rude. I'm Lorelei Quellton."

Taryn offers a slightly flourished bow, "Taryn Wystrel at your service." He chuckles, "There is food without meat?" He chuckles, "Yeah, you can get a salad and fruit at least… " He chuckles, "Well, if you're wandering all the way to Arboren, then you have a long walk ahead of you… not to mention the swim…." He turns and points southwards, "You're probably wanting to the Ways… they are that way…"

Lorelei grins and giggles softly at his bow. Her smile drops into a playful pout, , "Yes! Of course there is! I've found there's wonderful food that don't, you just have to look for them." She'll turn to look south, and the pout turns a bit real, "I just came from that way!" She'll sigh, brow still furrowed, "Thank you. I guess I'll find a fruit booth on my way." When she turn back to look at him, her smile returns, "thank you. I'm sorry if I interrupted your dinner." she'll nod to his bag, and the sandwich within.

Taryn shrugs, with an impish grin, "Well, from what I have found is that food that doesn't have meat in it is what food eats for food." He chuckles, trailing off into soft laughter. "Yeah… that's about right… I have only been in Landing for a few days and I can't find but three things… one is a bar… and the only reason I can find it is that I have discovered every possible route to it without trying to." He glances to the bag, then back over to Lorelei, "Not really… I was about done anyway… If you like, I'd be more than happy to escort you to get some fruit then back to the Way… I know I can find my way there at least… I keep contemplating whether or not to give up my grand adventure here in Landing and just go back home… but at least for the moment I have reason enough to stay."

Lorelei tilts her head and laughs, "that is not true! I know plenty of animals that would disagree with you!and I'm not food!" She'll look up at him when he says he can only find the bar and she tries to not smirk. She'll not say anything though and will nod, If that wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience? I would appreciate it. " Giving him a better look, "Where is home for you then? And why would you give up on a grand adventure?"

Taryn grins slightly, "Well, I'll grant you're not food… Not really into cannibalism…" He smacks his lips slightly, "The meat is too stringy…" He winks at the remark. "I would not have offered, if I was not willing… " He looks around "Well, Landing isn't really my kind of scene… I grew up in a small village in the Southern Wilds… I'm used to wide open spaces… Landing is too claustrophobic for my tastes."

Lorelei wrinkles her nose. Yuck! And then she'll laugh, "Ewwhh!"Nodding, "Well, I appreciate it. That's all I'd need. My first week at my new job, and i get lost. My mother would be besides herself to tell me she told me so." She'll shake her head slightly, and then focus back on Taryn, "I can understand not wanting to live here. I get antsy if I can't get out into the forests. "She'll shrug slightly, "Which isn't looking like it's going to happen anytime soon with the Hostels." It's hard to tell if she's looking disappointed because of not getting to go out, or something else.

Taryn starts walking Lorelei towards one of the vendors that he's found to be more reasonable. "This guy over here seems to be pretty nice… and fair with his prices… " He cocks his head slightly, "So the news reports aren't exaggerating about the hostiles running around the woods over there?" He frowns slightly, "I knew that they had been found there… but I guess I was just hoping that it was more of an isolated thing and that the news was making it seem like it was worse than it actually is."

Following Taryn, Loree nods, "That's good. I don't have much with me." Well, she does but no need to advertise Eilara's money. She'll look down when he asks about the reports, "It's not good. I know they've been finding carcasses of animals, mutilated." She'll shiver slightly, pulling an arm around her midsection, "We have patrols, that are hopefully keeping them away but…I can't even go riding anymore. It's an awful thing to be upset about, I know." She'll give herself a small shake and a chastising smile. She'll look to the fruit cart, giving the vendor a bright smile.

Taryn puts his hand on Lorelei's shoulder in an attempt to be comforting, before he withdraws it just as sudden. He says softly, "Sorry… " It is a desire that he can certainly understand, "Well, you said that your Lady wished you to wander… Perhaps she could arrange for you to go riding, say the Vale, where there's wide open plains and for the time being no such concerns…"

Lorelei blinks, surprised at the sudden hand then no hand. She doesn't look offended, just, surprised. She'll give him the same bright smile she just gave the vendor, "Maybe. That would be nice. Although I don't know if I'd want to bring any of my horses that far." she'll pause, realizing she's sounding like she's bragging, "My family, we raise them. It's our business. The farm is safe, but I used to like going into the forests with them. They always liked it." She'll turn back, picking out a citrus and two apples. after paying she'll turn and hand him one of the apples, "I can't eat in front of you without sharing." There's a small playful grin on her lips.

Taryn takes the apple, "Thank you… " He presses the apple under his nose, closing his eyes for a second to enjoy the scent. Obvious the carnivore does at least enjoy fruit as well. He looks over at Lorelei and there is something new to his expression. A wide and very ernest smile dances across his lips and into his eyes. "I was apprenticed to the stablemaster back home when I was little… I have worked with horses all my life… I can certainly understand." The smile turns into a playful grin, "Now, I understand why I was so moved to offer my assistance… I felt a familiar soul lost in the same stone and steel forest as me… longing for the same things."

Lorelei giggles at his clear appreciation of the apple. "Good to know you're not just someone who eats meat that eats food that eats food. "She'll then stop, eyes going in a thoughtful upturn. She may have added too many layers of eats food there. She'll shrug, taking a small bite of her own apple. She gin back, "Oh…That's brilliant. I wouldn't say we're stable masters, or anything like that. We've never had more than 6 or so. We board them, mostly. But I've gotten to help with birthing and then the training." she'll smile around her apple, cheek turning pink again, but for different reasons. Her eyes flutter downwards, inspecting the apple slightly, "Why are you here, then? You're home sounds wonderful."

Taryn takes a large bite out of the crisp apple. He swallows down that mouthful before speaking. "I felt that I needed to see Landing… at least once and with everything going on, I figured now was the time to do it. You know?" He smiles, "Besides, I have the chance to try to gentle one of the royal's horses… a magnificent horse… so I'm stayin' long enough to work with her… then I'll probably go home… "

Lorelei will follow Taryn, letting him set the pace. She'll nod while chew to what he says. "I think my mother wants me to go find some royal to be a companion to." She'll shake her head, blushing now for a 3rd different reason. She'll keep her eyes down, watching her apple in her hand. "Handmaid was as good as I could have gotten in her eyes without…that. Lady Eilara lets me go about though. I've gotten to met all types of people, and see places I would have never gotten to." She'll take another bite, a bit less lady like this tame, and chew before her eyes go big and she'll grin, "Really? Oh! that's wonderful! What's she like? Horses on Arboren are wonderful, but I bet they feel different in different places, just like the people."

Taryn really could go on and on about horses, and he does so for a bit, talking all about the special breed that Lady Soleil's parents had created and the tattooing down to cause the patterns on the horses coat and the war horses bred in his homeland. "There is nothing wrong with serving as a handmaiden if that is what you are happy doing. My mother was a waitress… but she was happy being a waitress… we may not have had a lot growing up, but I was never at want for anything… and that is what truly matters."

And Loree nods, enjoying the talk of horses. She's not as knowledgeable as Taryn, but it's clear she has a love for them. The only thing she seems to balk at at all is the idea of war horses. She'll not say anything against them, but it's clear the idea is bothersome to her. She'll finish with her apple, tossing the core into the nearest trash receptacle. She'll just shrug lightly, starting to peel the orange. "It was that or stay with my mother. It's alright. It's not a bad job." and while she'd rather be grooming horses than people, it's a job, with security. The orange sprays a fine mist, making the air around them both smell wonderful for a moment as they walk. She'll grin down at the fruit and once she gets it peeled enough, breaks it in half and offers it to him.

Taryn moves the subject from war horses when it becomes obvious that Lorelei is not comfortable with the topic. He tosses the core into the same receptacle. When she offers him the part of the orange, he shakes his head, "Nah, that's alright… the apple filled me up… Thank you though… " He pauses, canting his head slightly to the side, "Well, if you are not happy as a handmaiden, then stick with it until something better comes along… "

Lorelei snorts lightly, "I'm not going to be a companion." It's not really directed at him, more like she's reminding herself. She'll place a piece of orange in her mouth, and shrug at him. Chewing and looking around before she answers, "I know, but with the Hostiles…" she'll just let that trail off. What can be said, really?

Taryn raises an eyebrow slightly, "That isn't what I meant by something better… I meant something better for you… something that truly makes you happy… " His eyes are filled with his own concerns about the inevitable war. "War is coming… we can't stop it, but hopefully the marines and knights will be able to put an end to it before it overwhelms Haven… Just as important as defending the empire, so is maintaining the status quo. People have got to keep on living.. they cannot put life on hold because of the threat of war…."

Lorelei looks down again, biting at her lip slightly, "Well…I don't know what that would be. What would make me happy." she'll force a small smile, "I'm not unhappy." A deep breath as he talks about war. He's not saying anything that they havn't all heard a thousand times, it's still scary though. She'll nod, not really feeling like the rest of her orange now. "I'd like to help, the soldiers, but I have nothing I could offer."

Taryn smiles reassuringly, "Well, I'm sure when the right thing comes along, you'll know it when you see it." He reaches up and combs his hair back with his fingers, "Well, I wouldn't say that… if you see a soldier… and you think about it.. thank them… give them words of thanks and encouragement… Trust me, you'd be surprised how much of a difference something like that that might make… " He grins slightly, "Especially from a pretty girl, such as yourself… " As they walk along, Taryn comes to a stop on the outskirts of the Ways. "Well, looks like our little walk has found its destination…" He gestures, "Here are the Ways… So whenever you're ready you can go on home… " He gives a mock sigh, "I on the other hand need to get back to my bunk because the morning will be here way too early…"

Lorelei nods, a bit of a thoughtful look on her face. Her eyes widen slightly at his compliment and she'll swallow nervously. "Thank you, for escorting me, and talking with me." She'll smile, cheeks pink still, but she's trying to ignore them, "But just think, you get to get up and work with a beautiful creature. There is always a silver lining." She'll turn to leave, but then turn back, "Perhaps I will get lost again and see you? I lose my bearing easy." she'll give another bright smile and turn and leave off through the Ways.
