A Titanium Mine on Nubilus
The landing area is industrial, no-nonsense. Functional to the extreme. The landing pad for transports in the remote mountains and plataeus is little more than a flat concrete pad. An even larger area of flat rock surrounds the landing pad, with machinery strewn between there and the entrance of the mine, visible a hundred meters or so away, sloping down into the mountain itself. Stacked metal crates are scattered around the area, equipment and supplies left behind when the mining crew fled earlier. Abandoned heavy machinery sits idle. There are a hundred places where the knights might be able to find cover…or where Hostiles might be hiding out of sight.

The call had gone out several days ago, passed along through official channels, direct messages, personal conversations…but never by the InfoSphere, should Hostile forces be snooping about wirelessly. The plan is not complex, nor is it impossible. In addition to the single large force of Hostiles on an occupied plateau above the clouds on Nubilus, several titanium mines had been attacked. The lifeblood of the economy on Nubilus, and among the largest producers in the system, even one mine falling into enemy hands shall not be tolerated. Calling forth a small number of armed and armored knights, Young Lady Veryna intends to harass Hostiles occupying one mine in particular before they can establish a strong foothold and begin their own mining operations.

Those responding to the calls for help, members of House Orelle and its vassals - keeping the problems within the Ring and the Lashes - are gathered at Summit, the capital of Nubilus. Unlike other scenarios, there is no grand and glorious charge into battle here, or ramships. To reach their destination, the group will have to board an atmospheric transport ship and fly to the mine. The knights are assembled on the platform of the Sky Palace, the transport ready and waiting, with Veryna there as well, running a final check of arms and armor before boarding.

It's been a little while since Elodie has been in her armor. She went over it at least half a dozen times before they left their apartments, having heard through her friends in the Larent family that this was happening. She's more pale than usual as she waits with her bow strapped to her back with her quiver, and field surgery kit on hand. Morrigan, no longer Sergeant Wolf and now dressed in Cindravale colors shadows her as usual.

Among those called here from the other Lashes is Sir Cynan Dalton, who stands on the platform dressed in his sand-colored armor. Given the current state of affairs around Detritus, it's almost refreshing to have a change of scenery, even if it's out of the frying pan and into the fire. Accordingly he's both relaxed and alert, hands at his side, a large blade sheathed on his back.

He may not quite be from one of the Orelle vasals, but Sammel followed when Elodie came. Dressed in his armor, and having the poleaxe with him, he looks around for a few moments, before he places a hand on his wife's shoulder, offering her a quiet smile, before he looks around at the others assembled now.

The crew of the transport ship stand ready and waiting. Interestingly, they aren't dressed as men-at-arms or naval soldiers, but rather, in the uniforms of the miners. Who better to pilot the transport than those who do it most everyday? The handful of fighters assembled, and at attention, Veryna takes the opportunity to say a few words. "Thank you all for aiding House Larent today," she begins, stepping directly in front of the door of the transport vessel. "For too long have the Hostiles been allowed to operate with impunity on Nubilus. Their known position was tolerated thus far so that military resources could be contributed to the fight elsewhere."

"However, they now threaten our titanium mines, a critical resource to our war effort. This action cannot stand. We must eliminate this threat before it can grow. The mission is simple. Our scouts report that their hold on this particular mine is nascent, and they've yet to entrench themselves and begin operations. Now is the perfect time to strike. We land, we sweep through the mine and engage in close quarters where their numbers are insignificant, and we wipe them out." With that she turns, and steps onto the transport.

"Inculta stands by Nubilus as we always have." Cynan dips his head in a low, respectful nod, then stands still, eyes half-closing as he listens to the briefing, brow furrowing. "They will be strong yet," he mutters to no one in particular as he follows Veryna onto the transport. "Steel yourselves."

The blue eyes in the pale skin watch Young Lady Sir Veryna as she briefs them. Elodie's expression is serious, moreso than usual when going into battle. She glances over to the knights where her husband has been lined up, and then back straight ahead again. Morrigan's eyes rest on his charge for a long moment, but he remains calm.

Sammel listens in quiet as he nods a bit, offering a quiet smile. "I'm glad to be able to help," he offers, words kept a bit quiet for the morning now.

One everyone has boarded the transport, the pilots waste little time. They know the workings of the vessel inside and out, and pilot it is second nature…and that was exactly the goal. To say that it's traveling in the lap of luxury would be a lie; it's not a luxury passenger vessel, but a functional industrial transport to ferry mine workers from facility to facility, a dozen or so at a time. Of course, with the armor filling the space, it can accomodate a lot less! The trip from the Sky Palace to the mine takes something less than 15 minutes. As they approach, skimming as low above cloud level as possible, the pilots call out numbers, times. The plan is a quick drop, as brief a pause as possible for the knights to unload, before the transport flies to a safe distance. They have one chance for a visual scan of the mine, and though enemy strength is reported to be light, there's no knowing if it's true. One chance to take a look and abort on the flyby.

The pilots, keener eyed than most and supplemented by instrumentation report that the entrance and landing area of the mine are clear…for the moment. The transport descends with gut-churning speed, drops the hatch, and hovers only long enough for everyone to disembark. Veryna leads the charge down the ramp, blue armor polished, and blue light shield springing to life!

Cynan is right behind Veryna, lifting his blade off his back as he charges and gripping it in both hands. He keeps close, just a step or two back of the leader, and his eyes flicker from side to side, searching those hidden areas for threats. Or targets.

When first leaving the transport, Elodie has her bow strung, and once off she nocks an arrow. Until someone is hurt, she'll do what she can with cover fire. One step back and to the right, Morrigan has his sword in hand.

Followint the other knights, Sammel keeps his poleaxe in a position where its easy to head in spike-first if needed. Looking around for their targets at the moment, "Okay, let's do this," he mutters to himself now.

The reason that there were no Hostiles in sight shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone. With their camoflague, the scouts aren't visible, especially from an unstable platform like a hovering transport ship. It's just moments later when they Hostiles make their presence known. Two scouts, left in the landing area to keep a lookout utilizing their stealth abilities and having taken advantageous, covered positions, take aim…and unleash with their launchers. The first two off the transport are their targets, seeking to drive them into cover long enough to summon reinforcements from within…

Some Hostile presence here was expected, of course, but the expected can still be surprising. In particular, the projectile glancing off his neck armor catches Cynan off-guard, but he recovers reasonably quickly and turns toward his assailant. His approach is cautious, but he evidently has no intention of giving the adversary chance to bring in reinforcements. Rather, he advances, weapon held low.

The two Hostile scouts let fly with those steel ribbons, finding it hard to hit their targets as they race down the ramp of the transport. As the Havenites scramble off the landing pad, the distance between the two groups closes down. The Hostiles don't bother to reload, instead digging in and drawing their axes. One of the ribbons zips by Veryna, clattering off the concrete of the landing pad, and hitting hard enough to chip the material! She immediately ducks behind her shield as she continues to advance on the Hostiles, now exposed as the knights close in.

As the ribbons come flying towards them, Elodie ducks down, but she still disembarks, moving to the side and loosing an arrow back at one of the scouts that fired its launcher.

When he's a few yards away from the Hostile, Cynan breaks into a full run, lifting the blade high and angling it straight toward the scout's midsection. His charge isn't reckless - every step is measured, every move is precise - but it's certainly /forceful/. Murmuring something to himself, he brings his sword around in a great, sweeping cut.

With one arrow loosed, Elodie is quick to nock another arrow, keeping on the same Hostile as Ceryna closes in.

The Hostiles prepare to engage the knights. Each Hostile, equipped to fight independently and in mobile fashion, raises it axe to take a swipe at the knights bearing down on them. Veryna holds the shield up as she approaches with less gusto than Cynan, sword held up and at the ready, prepared to take a quick slash or lightning stab at the Hostile, depending on how the enemy decides to break, left or right, forward or backward.

Up comes Cynan's blade, and that big, sweeping cut strikes true. The tip of the weapon bites deep into the Hostile's body, and his hands hold steady as the bastard sword cleaves through the adversary. Another moment, and he pulls the weapon free, ducking out of the way of a bludgeon and getting back to his feet to attack again.

Engaging the Hostile that shot at her, Veryna is caught off guard by the sheer speed of the Hostile's attack. The axe swings out, and even though it's in the Hostile's right hand, the attack doesn't come from that side, against her shielded side. Rather, the Hostile is quick enough to spin around, and swing around entirely to bear down from her sword side. She takes a quick stab at the Hostile, which it seems is just what it wants her to do, as it leaves her leaning in that direction, and exactly in the path of the axe, which crunches against the armor on her right side!

Sammel moves in for one of the Hostiles now, trying a swing with the axe part of his weapon now. Keeping quite quiet, asyaf from the attack now.

Staying back by the transport, Elodie pauses for a moment as she nocks her arrow, hearing the glash of weapons on armor. A scan of the area shows all the Havenites still standing and fighting, so she takes aim once more on the Hostile she's been tracking.

The Hostile attacking Veryna manages to finish a one-two right-left with lightning speed. Whipping the one-handed axe around and using elbow and wrist like coils it smashes the head of the axe into Veryna's left side, as she takes a slash from the right, following the Hostile's first hit. The smash on the other side of her armor sends her reeling, staggering back and taking her out of the fight with the armor pinched in around her middle! The Hostile is now free to engage Sammel, who manages to score a hit with that long polearm.

Cynan's second strike, hurried as it is, isn't nearly as effective as his first. He still manages to land a glancing blow, striking at the Hostile's hand, but he barely has time to see the results of his handiwork before he watches another knight stagger back. "Sir Veryna!" he exclaims, with as much surprise as concern in his voice, but that's as much attention as he has to spare. His blade comes back up, poised to deal this one a killing blow before attending to the other.

The arrow bounces from the armor of the Hostile, but then Veryna is down. Without a word, the bow is slung back on her back, and Elodie is on the move. Morrigan shadows her, the two going low and quietly, until she's at the heir's side. The Wolf stands guard as Elodie works quickly, her scanner pinpointing cracked ribs and an internal bleed. With practiced hands, she takes out the sonic hypo, putting a stop to the bleed, the ribs will have to depend on the armor to hold for now.

Seeing how the Hostile he's been trying to take out manages to hit a solid hit against Veryna, Sammel steps forward a touch more aggressively, to try keeping the enemy busy at the moment. "Okay, I'll keep this one busy," he offers to the others, this time jabbing the spiky end of the weapon at the creature. "Try dealing with this!"

With the lady knight treated, Elodie helps her up and backs off to find some cover again. With her guard, she keeps an eye on the battle, gaze straying to Sammel to see that he's all right.

Veryna is more than grateful for the assistance, though getting out any words of thanks is a challenge in and of itself. It's all she can manage to stay on her feet and keep breather while Elodie carries out her treatments. However, once the treatments are done, she doesn't seem like she's in any great hurry to return to the fight. She hefts her shield up, keeping as tight behind it as she can, and gingerly brings herself back into the fray. She's moving noticably slower and breathing with quite a bit of effort and pain.

As he was going for the Hostile, the very same Hostile was going for Sammel as well. And it's dodging that incoming attack that makes his own attack suffer now, as he ends up with only a glancing blow against the enemy now. Muttering something under his breath, he keeps on going, this time going in with a sweeping attack, a bit lower than the central point of the Hostile.

The bastard sword goes up again, biting deep into the Hostile's chest. It seems Cynan is convinced that his foe is beaten - so convinced that he's taken quite by surprise when the thing's weapon crashes against his neck. His armor, however, was anticipating the blow quite sufficiently. "Are you all right, Sir Veryna?" Then he whirls about, aiming to /finish/ his adversary once and for all.

The fourth time, it seems, is the charm. Cynan's sword slashes across the Hostile's lower body, and it crumples to the ground even as one last ineffective blow thuds off his armor. Without pause, Cynan turns and lunges for the one that brought Veryna low, his blade held high.

"I'm fine," Veryna wheezes out, grimacing in pain when she does. "Just…finish these them off." With sword held weakly in hand, Veryna sumbles back into the fight, close up behind her shield as the Hostile whirls and spins, challeneged to close in against Sammel's longer weapon with its own axe.

Getting his weapon free again after his strike, Sammel backs up a few steps, before he swings for the Hostile once more, this time using the axe part of the weapon again. Not looking back to see how the others are doing, even if it's quite tempting now.

The combined assault of the knights is enough to finally disable the last scout. But one of the advantages of the all their technology is the ability to call for reinforcements. When the scout falls, said reinforcements are appearing, from the mouth of the mine. Two larger soldiers, having been inside, exploring the tunnels and determining the layout, are approaching at their steady, unrelenting pace, sworts drawn.

As she was backing up, and no one else went down, Elodie drew her bow from her back again. Nocking an arrow, she shifts to the side, patiently looking for an opening then firing. This time, she avoided the reinforced chest and head that kept bouncing her arrows back, and went for the weaker armor, lower, and it's leg buckles from the hit.

"Be careful, Sir Veryna," Cynan replies, probably quite unnecessarily. His weapon is one of several buried in the other Hostile, which soon joins its fellow on the ground. "You owe it to your people to return without further injury." With the immediate threat gone and another incoming, he lifts his weapon and holds it in a simple guard, turning to face the approaching soldiers. With the same forceful, purposeful charge, he moves to engage.

Taking a few moments to look around as he sees the Hostile fall, Sammel shakes his head a little as he sees the approaching reinforcements. "Okay, looks like we've got a few more incoming." Moving for the other one than the one Cynan's going for now.

The soldiers approach, and the Havenites are prepared. They aren't stealthy or interested in ambushing. Rather, they intend to take advantage of the almost 'fair' odds. Still laboring to breath a bit, Veryna follows Cynan to engage one of the soldiers. She favors her shielded side, however, taking a weak cut at the Hostile.

Cynan is fast, but it seems this Hostile, at least for the moment, is faster. A sword darts out and slashes across the Knight's belly, slowed but not quite halted by his dun-colored armor. There's only a moment's hesitation before he whirls around, bringing the blade up and across to bite into his enemy's neck. Taking a step back, he plants his feet and prepares to strike again.

The new soldiers approaching, even though they've been anticipated, weren't expected /right/ then. Elodie's nock and fire is hasty, skittering along the landing pad as she tries for another low shot but aims too low. "Don't worry about me, love," she sends through on a personal comm to Sammel, watching him fight with a bit of proud gleam in her eye, hidden by the helmet's visor

Turns out the weak slash isn't effective, as it misses, but perhaps Veryna's defensive slash is enough to distract the soldier for just long enough for Cynan's sword to take it in the neck. She moves around to the side opposite Cynan, to engage the Hostile from both sides. Once again, she takes a nother slash, as quick as she can, at the Hostile.

Managing to get a hit in on the next Hostile, Sammel once more dances out of the way of the incoming attack. Who knew that dancing skill was so useful in combat, right? Nodding as he hears Elodie's words, his helmet hides the smile at the moment. "Just let me know if any of them start attacking you, okay?" he replies over the same channel, before he moves forward once more.

Again the Hostile's blade flicks out, this time glancing harmlessly off the armor on Cynan's chest. Again his own blade comes down, cutting into the adversary's lower body. "Keep pressing," he mutters, as much to himself as to the other Havenites. "We nearly have them."

Pressed on both sides, the Hostile can't fight off both attacks at once. The result is that the attempt means both attacks land. Even Veryna's pained slash manages to glance across the Hostile's side, which turns out to be caught between her blade and Cynan's. As trained, she presses, letting her guard down a bit to follow up the slash with another.

As long as the Havenites remain standing, Elodie will keep trying to do her part, rather than just sit at the edge doing nothing. At Sammel's request she grins, but looses her arrow before she replies, "Don't worry, I have a Wolf protecting me. Didn't you tell me he did a pretty good job ringing your bell at the training exercises?"

As the Hostile soldiers succumb to the Havenite advance, sheer numbers win in the end. Though they're fast and effective, the knights surround and stab, hack, and slash until the Hostiles fall. Steel clashes against steel, armor, shield, as the fight whirls and spins, the soldiers scoring hits on the knights, who don't come out of the fight unscathed. One of the Hostiles manages to get a sword into Veryna's midsection, the same injured area that brought her to her knees prior, thanks to a scout's axe. Cynan and Sammel, however, finish the Hostile off, providing a moment's respite enough for Veryna to step out of harm's way.

In the aftermath of the skirmish, the Havenites might be left wondering if more Hostiles will appear. However, after taking cover and waiting for upwards of a half hour, no more Hostiles apear from the mouth of the mine. To ensure the mine's absense of Hostile forces, the group makes a slow, methodical inspection, of every tunnel, of every piece of equipment, every nook and cranny. The reports of the military scouts proved accurate; the Hostiles had only recently established a toehold on this mine. The quick response of the Havenites came in time to prevent the Hostiles from moving more significant numbers from the plateau they control to this particular mine.

When the transport returns to retrieve the knights, there's a more complete crew. They're prepared to take what supplies need to be taken, and to resume operation at this particular mine. Learning from experience, this mining crew comes complete with a significant number of men-at-arms, ready to fight off any further Hostile aggression. The depleted squad of knights is free to climb aboard the transport and return to the Sky Palace, to receive full treatment, repair their equipment, and prepare for the next fight.
